THE GUESS WHO - CANNED WHEAT
The second of the Randy Bachman -Burton Cunnings albums . The title a tip of the hat to the Californian blues-rock group, from an not so blues rock group from Manitoba . It had the the single “Laughing/Undun” that that been issued in July . There are some other good tracks here, “Minstrel Boy” the best in my opinion, but REALLY the reason you need this ,is the first, version of “No Time” that I LOVE . It is longer , more psychedelic than the single which is a different recording . I think the Guess who were a better band than they were given credit for .

THE 5TH DIMENSION - WEDDING BELL BLUES - Sept
This Laura Nyro song is another single from their “Age of Aquarius” album (4 in all.) It had not be slated for a single, but a DJ in San Diego started playing it off the album, and was getting a good response . They listened to the DJ, it was released and hit #1 . Their earlier records had been more joint vocal efforts , this was the first to feature Marilyn McCoo’s(wondeful) solo voice .

THE BAND - album - Sept 22
The more coherent, but slightly less other worldly, follow up to “Big Pink” . It continued the delving into backwoods moods, and the 19th century . Indeed the black and white cover shot looks like it was taken during the time of the Civiil War,“The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”,actually is set then . That song, the high point of the album, very sucucesfuly portray the feeling of a poor Southern farmer caught up in the war . What is amazing how believable it is (and how unbelievable Joan Baez’s version is) . The album has some fun songs, the hit “Up On Cripple Creek”, “Across The Great Divide”, and “Rag Mama Rag”(amazing) . Pretty much everything else is great . The singing of Helm, Danko, and Manuel, and the playing of everyone fit perfectly . This is they first album that Robbie Robinson takes more of the writing role, and became more the leader, at the expense of Richard Manuel, who fades more into the background, and becomes more and more a captive of his substance demons .

The Guess Who have the distinction for me
of having the most optimistic song of the 1960's

I like bands that have an emotional edge to them..
Levon Helm at Queens College was like God dropping with me
on the Quad.
RAG Mama RAG
I am so grateful that his daughter is carrying on in his footsteps!
Ummm my Mom listened to the 5th Dimensions
"The kisses and hugs wont carry me
until you marry me Bill"
When she was at work My buddy and I got baked listening to
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Blow on a Jug the hidden track on Sabotage
and Anthem of the Sun turned up to eleven..

Though founded in Washington, DC, this band would've been a perfect fit in the Boston music scene (https://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/the-bosstown-sound/)
